LADY QUEX’S BRILLIANT WIN

COMFORTABLE VICTORY IN FLYING Ridgeniount, Malayan and Silver Rule were the only defectiqns from the Flying Handicap, leaving the finest handicap sprint field ever seen in Taranaki. No fault could be found with the condition of any. of the eight starters, and all hit opt freely on the springy turf. The public placed most confidence, in Lady Quex ( £373) and the bonny New Plymouth mare duly won in convincing style from the second favourite, Hunting Cry ( £286 155,). ' Eaglet drew the rails. Consent. Lady Quex and Paganelli being Hunting Cry on the extreme outside. Bayacre gave a lot of trouble at the ' ■’•t and was placed a couple of lengths behind the field. From a perfect dispatch Consent was actually first to move, and when they settle J down he was leading Lady Qtlex, Gold Dawn, Hunting Cry and Tenterden,' with Bayacre going up fast. At the end of <- furlong the order had suffered a complete change, and Tenterden and Bayacre were leading from Lady

Quex, Hunting Cry and Concent;- with Gold Dawn, Pr/vnelli and Eaglet together next. Tenterden was half a length in front of Bayacre' going on to the High School bend, and Hunting Cry and Lady Quex were a • length and a half further back. Gray sent the mare through as soon as the sti'aight was reae’ -’d; where Tenterden‘quickly compounded. Lady Quex was hi front at the distance, where Hunting Cry and Bayacrc looked like taking a hand in the finish, but they were only there on sufferance, and the mare drew away to win “on her head” by two lengths from Hunting Cry, who cut Bayacre out of'second money by a neck. Consent was right up in fourth place-and then there was a break to Tenterden, Paganelli and Eaglet, with Gold .Dawn last. Lady-Quex recorded a ridiculously easy win and the gallop should not harm her 'in view of her race in “the Seventeenth Taranaki Stakes to-morrow. Hiinting Cry was on the rails practically all the way and had the run of the i-ace, but he was decisively beaten. Bayacre had to make up too much leeway over the first furlong to win, and under the circumstances, Jie ran a great race. Consent began well, but lost his position before the half-mile and was afterwards hemmed in on the rails. In the Stakes field he should do better. Both Paganelli and Eaglet have lost their brilliancy and were in hopejess positions from the start. Paganelli’s performance was ■ very disappointing.

WIN FOR BON EVE AT LAST. After many . disappointments, Bon Eve ran up to his Hawera form to win the Moturoa Electrje Maiden. Moatoa and others gave trouble at the barrier, and Goldzone was hopelesssly left. Gold Gleam was the first to show out, and he was followed on to the bend by Royal Bengal, Animated, Orby’s Choice, Traced,

Miss Chatter and True Lap. Gold Gleam was beaten when the straight was reached, and Royal Bengal was'left in front of Animated, Orby’s Choice, Bon Eve and Moatoa. Bon Eve and Orby’s Choice challenged below the distance and Moatoa joined in the struggle over the last 50 yards. However, Bon Eve was doing best and won by half a length. Moatoa got up to deadheat for second place with Orby’s Choice,- and Royal Bengal was a head away in fourth place. Then came Animated, Miss Chatter, GaySogne, Gold Gleam, Traced, Goldzone and True Lap. Orby’s Choice

( £216) was g good favourite over Royal Bengal ( £2OO 155.) and Moatoa (£1921). ' :
