MR. H. J. WARD VISITS DOMINION

FREE SERVICES OFFERED.

Wellington, Feb. 10. “I don’t know what I can do until I look around, but I am ready to do anything at all,” said Mr. Hugh J, Ward on arrival from Australia this morning. Mr. Ward, who is well known in theatrical life, conies from Sydney representing the New Zealand. Association in Australia, of which he is an honorary member in the hope that his ‘efforts will be of use in-raising money for the re-habilitation of the earthquake sufferers. Mr. Ward added that he had retired from business. “I have the time and the inclination to help in gratitude for 30 years’ assistance and association in the business 1 was in,” he said. “1 have conic over here to do anything I can. I have certain ideas, which have been very successful in Australia, and after I have observed the conditions here 1 may be able to adapt them sb that they will be helpful in raising money for the present need.” On the voyage over Mr. Ward got to work among the passengers and crew of the Marama and as a result £7O was collected for the earthquake funds, £4O from tile crew and £3O from the passengers.

STATE LOTTERY PROPOSED.

PALMERSTON CHAMBER’S PLAN.

Tire Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce is forwarding to the Prime Minister - and ■ the Minister of Internal Affairs a suggestion that a State lottery similar to that conducted in Ireland recently be organised to secure money to rehabilitate the stricken towns of the earthquake area.

MASTERTON OFFERS HELP.

BOARDING FOR STUDENTS.

Masterton, Feb. 10.

The Solway .College Board of Governors to-day decided to take ten pupils of the devastated earthquake area as boarders for one year free of cost. The Masterton County Council donated £lOO to the relief lund.
