SHORTAGE OF CLERGY

NEEDS OF ENGLISH CHURCH. London, Feb. 3. The increasing shortage of clergy for the Church of England is forcibly shown in the preface of the 60th issue of Crockford's Clerical Directory. The editor estimates that the Church requires at least 1200 new men a year for ten years, and thereafter 700 a year should suffice. “We think, that it is impossible that these figures will be even approached unless, as in the dark Victorian age, the majority of the candidates for Holy Orders are able to pay the expenses of their education and accept stipends after ordination not amounting to a living wage,” he says. “The general situation is going from bad to worse, and a crisis of the first magnitude draws nearer every year.”
