THE TEACHERS OF MUSIC

RECOGNITION OF COMPOSERS. STATUS OF THE ASSOCIATION. By Telegraph.— Press Association. • Christchurch, Last Night. At the conference of the Music Teachers’ Association to-day it was decided to refer the matter of a musical journal to the local societies for further discussion.

Performance of the works of young New Zhalapd composers wjs considered when Mr. Barry Coney brought .forward a remit: “That all, branches should encourage and endeavour to secure adequate performances of works that show promise.” The remit was adopted. A remit to have the association recognised by the Government was brought forward by Dr. Galway (Dunedin), vVhb pointed out that what was wanted wa,s that the Government should take cognisance of the musicians’ organisation in the same way as it now did of societies of accountants and lawyers. After discussion, the following motion was carried: “That the executive be asked to draw up an amending Bill constituting a society, and to submit it to the Minister of Education.”

A remit providing that all branches of the association should inaugurate concerts to bring young performers before a critical public was brought forward by Dr. Phillips, who stated that there were very few opportunities for young people, not merely students, but also young professionals, to display their ability to a critical audience. He felt that the local sopieties might institute a series of concerts, say, three in each year, and arrange for detailed criticism in the newspapers. In this way they would be’doing a real service fbr many, young people who might other; wise have no opportunity of bping known." ■. The.motion, which was altered to read, “That the various local branches of the association should inaugurate, a series of concerts in order to bring out young performers before a critical public,” and was carried.

It was agreed that the executive should interview shipping companies with a vipw to obtaining one free passage to England, per year for an exhibitioner of the Associated Board of Music. Misses M. Martin and F. Payne (Dunedin) were appointed to represent the association at. the international musical conference to be held this year at sanne/'The next conference will be held at Wellington in January, 1932.
