ADJUSTING LAND CHARGES

SOUTH TARANAKI PROPOSALS. FARMER'S FORM COMMITTEE. Members of the South Taranaki provincial. executive of the Farmers’ Union met in Hawera yesterday _to consider the appointment of a committee to deal with the adjustments of land charges as between mortgagee and mortgagor. The meeting was not open to the Press. Wih a view to overcoming difficulties at present being experienced, a scheme was discussed for the purpose of bringing together farmers and the holders of mortgages including those for the balance of purchase money. The idea was to form a tribunal to investigate cases of distress. It is understood the meeting appointed a committee which will shortly make a report. A concrete scheme will be subsequently -submitted to the Government. SOUTH TARANAKI TENNIS. HAWERA CLUB'S TEAMS. There has been some discussion as to whether or not to close the school and send the children to Hawera. Most residents of the district are pleased that the school will not be closed; many of them thought closing would be a retrograde step. Residents thought it a pity to close the school, as there is a fine, airy, sunny room for the children, and many of the smaller ones would have had to walk long distances in all weathers.

Most .pf the hay and ensilage crops have been garnered. Rains have caused a wonderful-growth of grass all over the district. Mr. and Mrs. G. Gibson have recently returned from a motor tour of the Auckland district.

Mr. Dell Eustace is recovering from an injury to his leg caused by a kick from a horse while he was working in the hay field. Mrs. B. Eustace, who is slowly recovering from a recent illness, is the guest of Mrs. L. Eustace.

In days of hardships on the farms one sometimes hears of very fine neighbourly actions. Not very far from Hawera one man had suffered a long and severe illness and was unable to harvest his hay crop. He engaged his neighbours to do it for him. When it was finished he sent the payment to the men, but great was his surprise and appreciation when they immediately returned the money.;, Although they themselves were all feeling the effects of the depression, they , felt that the one who had been stricken with illness needed it more than they, illness needed it more than they. This fine spirit was very much appreciated by the sick man and his wife. As the result of a collision between a . car and a horse-drawn vehicle about ® p.m. yesterday on lower Hastings 'Road, near Matapu, Ernest William Stead, I a farm labourer, suffered a 'broken leg. He was taken to the Hawera hospital. Stead, who was driving the car towards Hawera, was about two miles south of the Matapu hall when- the collision occurred. The occupants of the other vehicle, the driver of which is believed to be a woman, were not, injured so far as is known. Stead is employed by Mrs. H. M. Hunt, Mokoia. The injured man was taken to Hawera by Mr. H. R. Hooper, Normanby. • ,
