CHEMICAL PRACTITIONERS

PROPOSALS FOR REGISTRATION PROFESSIONAL STATUS. SOUGHT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Nelson, Last Night. At the annual meeting of the New Zealand section of the Institute of Chemistry of Great Britain and'lreland discussion took place on the attitude of the section towards the proposed formation of a New Zealand Institute of Chemistry. One of the chief aims of the New Zealand Institute would be to work for the registration of chemical practitioners. It is necessary for tlic protection of the general public arid the profession that a high standard of qualifications be insisted upon from those admitted to membership, but it was. pointed out by Professor Denham in opening the discussion that it would be impossible to obtain an Act of registration unless those at present earning their living by the practice of chemistry were allowed to come in.' Professop Denham went on to state that since the formation of the Australian Chemical Institute the status of chemists in that country had greatly improved, and that this institute had become an authoritative body in Australia. As the result of representations made by the Australian Institute to the educational authorities in one particular State and with regard to the teaching of chemistry in technical schools, the advice of the institute had been acted upon. It was moved by Mr. W, Donovan and carried unanimously that the meeting approve of the object of the New Zealand Institute of Chemistry and express sympathy towards the formation of the new body and trust that the high standard of qualification suggested would be insisted upon. Mr. T. A. Glendining gave an address entitled - “Chemical Advances in Industry.” Mr. Glendining also furnished a report of a meeting which had taken place between representatives of the New Zealand section and. the Now Zealand Manufacturers’ Association. This afternoon the delegates visited a typical tomato house and later made a tour of the district. Visits Were paid to some of the Cawthron Institute's experimental areas.
