HAORDINGS BANNED
REMOVAL IN VICTORIA. Proprietors of advertising hoardings near State highways in Victoria were compelled to remove them by the end of December. /Thus, Victoria has established a lead in Australia for the preservation of the natural appeal of the countryside. ■ . . The by-law under which this order has been issued was challenged, but has been upheld by the State Full Court and the High Court, and the board intends to enforce it strongly. . . The Country Roads Board declared in its annual report tabled in Parliament on December 17, that many advertisers have supported the enforcement of the bv-law. Not only do the advertisements mar the. beauty of the landscapes, but, the board declares, also obscure the danger signs which are steadily being extended throughout the State. It is noteworthy that in England the Shell Company undertook a special advertising campaign in support of the abolition of hoardings from the roadside, and it refrained from making further use of them.
