PALMERSTON UNEMPLOYED
GREATER RELIEF REQUESTED.
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Palmerston N., Jan. 16.
Local unemployed, numbering about 50, made a demonstration this morning and later interviewed Mr. J. A. Nash, M.P., chairman of th© unemployed committee, requesting a greater measure of relief.
Th© chairman of the deputation said the meeting was the. outcome of a reply received from the Minister of Labour in which he had stated that the latest returns disclosed that there were not 300 unemployed registered locally. It was asserted that the actual number exceeded 300. ’
Mr. Nash agreed with the latter statement, also to call a special meeting of the unemployment committee. He added that he had already telegraphed the Acting-Prime Minister that between 300 and 400 were out of work and requesting the provision of relief work.
