HOSPITAL BOARD’S 00.-OPERATION

OBJECTION TO 3-HOUR SYSTEM.

By Telegraph.—Frees Association. Wellington, Last Night. A deputation, representing the Wellington Trades and Labour Council waited on the Wellington Hospital Board this afternoon in reference to the unemployment difficulty and asked for the board’s co-operation in persuading the Government ■to provide suitable shelter -for destitute. Certain buildings which might Se' used were mentioned. Arrangements should also be made to supply food, it was stated. Members of the deputation took exception to the arrangement under which men who were unemployed had to do three hours’ work for the City Council before they could obtain assistance, and contended it was . unfair.the City Council should have the men’s labour under terms’which' amounted to a shillin an hour. . Mr. F. Castle, chairman of the board, replying said the work oileyed by the City Council had been provided at the request of the board. It was not part of the council’s ordinary work. While it was true sustenance in return for three hours’ work amounted to three shillings in the case of single men, it amounted to. five shillings for married men. The Hospital Board was doing all it could to alleviate the position. The deputation’s proposals would be referred to a committee in due course.
