EXTRAORDINARY CONDUCT

PURCHASES FOR WEDDING HAD NO MARRIAGE IN PROSPECT By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Jan. IS. Among extraordinary things done by Thomas Edward Preston, aged 26, described as a farmer, was the ordering of all kinds of goods for his marriage, although he had no marriage in view. Preston was charged before Mr. Young S.M., this morning with being an idle and disorderly person and the magistrate, after commenting on his queer past, sentenced him to three months’ hard labour. Mr. Young suggested that the prison authorities should have the man examined to inquire into his mental condition. The chief detective said that Preston had’ come from Dunedin on license and during a month’s visit had been staying at different places, although he had no money. He called at Dominion Motors, Ltd., and gave them a cheque for £4OO for . a car of which he never took delivery. He repeated the process with Ford Motors, Ltd. At the time of his arrest Preston was negotiating for the purchase of furniture.
