This competition was introduced ’ some years ago when the Uruti branch - of the Farmers’ Union recognised the -.greiit value of calf-rearing competii tions. Valuable prizes have been offered - -'each year and the teachers and parents {have encouraged, the movement in every •possible way. Prizes are offered for the three lead- . /'lng calves from each school, while the awarded to the four leading If calves from each school are totalled, ■?■ and the,school with the highest aggregate is .awarded the Farmers’ Union ‘ - /Challenge Cup—a Silver trophy ’ donat,ed by Mr. J.,G. Fitzgerald.- .For .the {first two years the cup was won by the./■'Uruti. school, and last year it was won {■'■{by Musker’s. -special medal donated by Mr. F. W. Weston for the champion calf judged on dairy type was competed for. : Mr. F. W. Sutton, of the Stock. Division of the Department of Agrictilt'ure, was judge. Mr. A. R-aAlpe . (chairman of the Farmers’.Union) presented the cup to Miss {Cannell, teacher, of the Mount Messenger school,. a,nd congratulated the pupils on their success. Each of the three schools had now won the cup, he said. He.. expressed the hope that the' children-.would . maintain their interest in the competitions. • ■ Mrs. S. S, Butt presented the other prizes, the recipients being /congratulated on their, success. . • Mr. Alpc extended the thanks of the district to the-judge, and said they very, much appreciated the practical interest of Mr.: Sutton, who each' year judged the calves. Mr. Alps spoke : of - 'the wonderful improvement in the calves compared with those brought forward when the competitions were first started. They were better grown generally, and it was apparent, too, the children, had-, devoted a lot of time-to grooming.
