On Tuesday evening th© Mereinere people held their \ district Christmas tree and the prizesj/for the Sunday school were presented. The Sunday, school children sang a “Song of Welcome for Santa Claus” and at the close of the song two of the pupils, Miss Rita Wallace and Miss Audrey Williams, presented their teachers; Miss Murray .(superintendent) and Miss Wallace with beautiful bouquets of roses. Santa Claus then appeared blowing his trumpet, and there was great excitement amongst the children. . -. ’• “A ' '‘‘■-7 'z Santa Claus, after first greeting the children, proceeded to distribute, the Sunday school prizes as follows:—Junior girls: Jean Williams, Audrey Williams, Merle Bloor, Agnes' Millar, Isabel McNaught, Valerie Bloor, Sylvia Baker; junior boys: Alex Walla.ce, Billy Williams, Raymond Wallace, Roy Dunlop, Billy Gardner, Bobbie Swadel, Malcolm Millar, Georgie■ Swadel, Noel Foreman; Sunday school special, prizes, for juniors: Jean Williams, Audrey Williams, Bobbie Swadel, Alex Wallace. Senior.-.; girls: Gladys Murray, Rita Wallace, Noeline Wallace, Gwen Williams, Ruby Townsend, Mary McNaught, Belle Millar, Beverley Foreman and Joy Baker. Two Sunday school special prizes for attendance went to Isabel McNaught (junior) and Gladys Murray (senior). Father Christmas then proceeded to hand each child a gift from the beautifully decorated Christmas tree. Miss Murray and Miss Wallace assisted in the work. After each child had. received its gift from the tree, sweets, etc., Father Christmas joined the children in a game. Then he had to leave them to continue on his way, first of all wishing the children and ■ pai ents all a merry Christmas/ Supper was served to all present. The weather permitting, there was a. good number of members of th© tennis club present at the courts on Wednesday. OHANGAI SCHOOL PRIZE-GIVING. There was a large crowd of parents and friends at the prize-giving ceremony at the Ohangai school on Thursday afternoon. The weather was all that could ■be desired and the earlier part of the afternoon was spent on the lawns, the younger people playing tennis. At about 2 o’clock the children assembled in the school and. provided an enjoyable programme of musical numbers. Th© programme was:—Song, school; song, infants; recitation, Miss G. Clunes; song, seniors; song, infants; recitation, Miss S. Duff; song, seniors; recitation, Miss M. Patchell; song, scliool; vocal ducts, B. Ropia and Kara. Afternoon tea was served by the ladies after which the prizes were presented by Mr. Philpott in the absence of Mr. Sheehan, the chairman. , Presentations were made on behalt ci their teams by E. Trilford, captain of the basketball team, to Miss E. Patchell, who coached the team last season, and by J. Frahm, captain of the football team, to Messrs. N. Lee and S. Savage, who had trained the football team. A presentation was made to Mr. J\Dysou for the use of his lorry in conveying the children to their matches. GENERAL ITEMS. Miss Muriel Jackson, Hawera, is due at Auckland by the Rangitiki to-mor-row night. Miss Jackson, who left with the farmers’ party for England eight months ago, has had an extensive tom of Britain and Europe. J C Smith advertises a continuation of the sale of H. Kendall’s bankrupt stock of drapery and clothing on the premises, Union Street, Hawera, to-day, to-morrow and Wednesday, commencing at 11 a.m. each day. The Hawera Boy Scouts’ funds have benefited to the extent of £5 6s. 6d as the result of a competition for a Christinas cake donated by Mr, Ramsay of

" . • - —• -H DEATH OF TE ROTI PIONEER. The death occurred at Te Roti on Saturday of one of the pioneer residents of the district, Mrs. Mary Kelly; wife of Mr. Michael Kelly. With her husband she settled on Skeet Road about 50 voara ago, taking a bush section. -Mrs. Kelly, who was 76 years of age, wasin her usual good health on Friday but her death came suddenly, early on Saturday morning.
