HIGH SCHOOL BREAK-UP

DISTRIBUTION OF PRIZES. SUCCESSES DURING THE YEAR. At the Hawera High School breakingup ceremony on Friday the chairman of the Board of Governors, Mr. R. S. Sage, in the course of his introductory ' remarks, referred to the distributing of certificates at the end of the pupils fourth year. The school was not bound to do so, but it had become a cuetom. to present these records of the pupils’ work. Mr. H. Trimble, chairman of inc Stratford Technical High School Board, congratulated the school on the additions to the library, which was, he averred, one of the most important adjuncts it could have. Every boy and every girl, Mr. Dickie thought, should take an interest in politics. Boys who were just leaving school must think they were being launched into a pretty cold world, as the country was passing through troublous times. He would say, however, that there was always plenty of room at the top and the boy who was not easily discouraged would find opportunities. To a certain extent it was disappointing in a producing country like New Zealand, continued Mr. Dickie, that more young men were not taking up agriculture. They lived in a mechanical age and he was not sure that boys would not be wise to take up engineering. The learned professions were becoming overcrowded and the more practical ones leading to production were somewhat neglected. ' . , Prizes and certificates were then presented by. Mr. H. G- Dickie, M.P., as follows—
