A criticism of the Government action in refusing io pay subsidies until after April 1 next was voiced at a combined meeting of representatives of .the school Committees of Hastihgs and surrounding districts held last night. /■.-■. The following resolution was carried: “That this meeting of the combined school committees protests against the Education Department withholding sub-, sidies on approved works. “While we are prepared to allow Subsidies tp stand over until the financial position of the country improves, we consider that when the department . has given •* its approval for work to proceed and the committees have ? undertaken or completed that work, payment , should be made. To .state how that payments cannot be made until at least April 1 is a distinct breach of faith, and we consider, we, have not’ only a moral but a legal claim against the department. Will the department advise school committees how they are to meet their liabilities after completing authorised works? . ’
