PRESENTATION OF PRIZES

FUNCTION AT EGMONT VILLAGE CONCERT GIVEN BY CHRILDREN. The annual concert and prize-giving ceremony in connection with the Egmont Village school took place last night at the hall, which proved too small to accommodate the number of parents and friends. , The hall had been tastefully decorated with ferns and by tho school committee and staff, making an ideal setting for the concert, which was thoroughly enjoyable, comprising a varied programme, every item of which was executed by the young performers in a manner that told of natural ability combined ‘ with careful tuition on the part of their teachers. A pleasing feature was the singing in unison, an excellent effect being achieved in the Echo Song. The items were: chorus, school; recitation, Mat Dodunski; songs, juniors; recitation,, Nyla Hurlstone; songs, seniors; recitation, Nancy. Harper; Highland dance, juniors; recitation, Betty Bridger; song, juniors; recitation, Frank Harper; song, seniors; recitation, Dulcie Dodunski; dialogue; Mad Tea Party (Mad Hatter, Dena Hurlstone; Dormouse, Betty Olsen; March Hare, Tui Keenan; Alice, Betty Bridger). , , Miss Street and Mr. Harper played the accompaniments. At the conclusion of the concert Mr. H. R. Marsh, chairman of the committee, thanked the parents for their support. He also thanked the headmaster, Mr. A. L. Harper, and his assistant, Miss P. Street, for the time and trouble they had devoted to the training of the children. He complimented 4ho children on the way they had acquitted themselves not only .in-the finest entertainment that had been held in the school for some years, but also in their school work throughout the year. Mr. Harper thanked the people of the district and members of the school committee for their help. Mr. "Vy. J. Polson, M.P., said that from old association he appreciated the worth of Mr. Harper. He congratulated the children on, their excellent performance. Mr. Polson presented every primer with a. book and special prizes as follows: Dux of school, Fred Thorn ason; gardening, Dena Hurlstone, Ivy Gyde, Esma Thomason, Alfred Dryden, lan Morton and Frank Harper; Margaret Cup for the best pedigree calf exhibited, by member of boys’ and girls’ club at the New Plymouth show, Connie Stapletofl; Mona Mona Cup presented by Mr. A. J. Dodunski for the best calf judged on dairy type, Fred Thomason; Mr. W. Olson’s special for the best Margaret. Bridger. Margaret Bridger also received a special book from the members of the Egmont Village Bible Class. Mr. Polson expressed appreciation of the splendid work accomplished among the. farmers by Mr. J. M. Smith, of the Agricultural Department’s staff. Mr. Smith congratulated Egmont Village on its’splendid record in connection With the boys’ arid girls’ clubs. Ever since tho inception of that movement the district had been very prominent in the prize lii;t, he said. Fred Thomason extended thanks to Mr. Harper and Miss Street for the way they had helped the pupils in their work and their games. On behalf of the basketball girls Ivy Gyde made a presentation to Miss Street. . The children in fancy dress then invaded the roohi to daiice. Supper was provided, by the ladies, Mrs. H. R. Marsh supervising. The hall was cleared and dancing enjoyed to excellent music provided by the Egmont Village orchestra. Mr. M. Dodunski was master of ceremonies.
