Plymouth Boys’ High School essay competition.—Senior: D. C. McKee 1, D. A. Smith 2. Junior: L N. Menzies 1, J. A. Keeling 2, The winning essay in the junior , competition, which covered the period more comprehensively than did thb senior contributions, is reproduced in this morning’s supplement. The winning Senior essny is being published in , the ordinary issue of the paper. In the senior competition there was practically no margin between the two top essays. The "second entry in the junior competition was well, done, considering the age of the competitor. . ' Over 80 stories were submitted in the short story competition, entries7coming from Auckland, Palmerston North, Wellington, Christchurch, New Plymouth, Stratford, Hawera, • Eltham,. Inglewo.od, Opunake, Manaia, Midhirst, Waverley, Uruti, Patea, Normanby, Waitara, Wljangamomona, Bell Block, Okoke and Oakura. This competition was notable for the merit of several very'young competitors, particularly one boy from Fitzroy, one girl from Korito, one .girl from Opunake and one girl froth Okaiawa. With a little \ more maturity any of these entries would rank with the best stories , submitted.

As with the literary contributions', the photographic entries were' drawn from every corner of Taranaki. Many of the photographs' were a credit to the competitors who entered them,, and the final adjudication was a very difficult task. In many cases good subjects lyere treated,'blit the size of the photographs necessitated ' their rejection ■at -once; As- a guide to future competitions it may be pointed out that the minimum size considered is full postcard size, and if possible the entries should be even larger. : ' .-’ ''' '' 7 ' None of the cartoons submitted was suitable, arid no award was: inad< in this class. ‘
