FINANCE OF THE RAILWAYS
MAY INTERFERE WITH BUDGET
MR. STALL WORTHY APPREHENSIVE
STRIVINGS OF THE CABINET.
By Telegraph.—Pres® Association. Auckland, December 17.
The Hon. A. J. Stallworthy, Minister of Health, in a post-sessiomri address expressed apprehension lest the railway finances might seriously interfere with the Government’s attempts to balance the Budget. He said the position had been developing ever since the-railway? were started and had become so serious that unless taken in hand would smash the finances of the country in the next few years. The Government was striving to balance the Budget, but he was afraid that the railways position might make it impossible. If they failed it would not be for want of striving, added Mr. Stall worthy. “It is an unenviable task to be a Minister of the Crown in these difficult days. All the time we have to make unpopular decisions. We are 'seeking not to be popular but to do our job, and we are willing to take the risk , of being turned out at the next election.”
