CALF-REARING VALUABLE
■SENIOR INSPECTOR’S VIEWPOINT.
The opinion that the calf-rearing competitions as sponsored by the Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Clubs formed an invaluable link, between the home arid the. school was advanced’ by Mr. N. R. McKenzie, senior inspector of schools, to a News reporter at the selection of champion calves at the Waiwakaiho sliowgrounds, New Plymouth, yesterday. ‘ “There is nothing being taught in the schools to-day which would have drawn such a large number aS theje is here,” shid Mr. McKenzie indicating the 250 parents and friends who attended the judging. “In the opinion of the most enlightened educationists of the day, practical subjects such as these are of ffiofe educational value than most Of the academical subjects.” . Mr. McKenzie said that apart eVen from the practical value of the work of rearing the calves there was the aesthetic value—that of having achieved something well, worth while in contributing towards the development of a fine product.
In view of this, said- Mr. McKenzie, it was gratifying to see the interest taken iii the movement. Besides the parents; there were present teachers ,froiii the schools of nearly all the competing children, The chief agricultural instructor, Air. D. Mackay, assisted in the worje of the day.
