FRANKLEY SUNDAY SCHOOL

The anniversary concert and .prizegiving of the Frankley Road undenominational Sunday school took place on Tuesday evening in the Frankley School gymnasium. The superintendent, Mr. G. P. S. Smith, introduced Hie Revs. J. Boothroyd and R. Inglis, representing St. Aiibyn and St. Andrew’s Churches. Santa Claus arrived and gifts from the Christmas tree were distributed to the primary scholars.'Thq chairman, the Rev. J. Boothroyd, spoke of the child and its spiritual welfare;. The aim of the Sunday school, he said, was to win the young to Christ before Satan had left his mark on them. ■He appealed to the mothers and fathers to help in thia work. ■ How much more successful would . Sunday school work be if each scholar'h’ad a praying mother and father. Mr, Boothroyd, showed a Robert Raifces Centenary medallion struck in 1880 to commemorate the founder of Sunday schools. • The superintendent said the scholars had assisted at 2Y>B four times and at a concert in the Fitzroy Methodist Church. A picnic would be held' on January 2 at the Meeting of the Waters. A concert in June had netted £1 18s fid for the school committee. The selfdenial offering by the scholars had returned £1 16s. The proceeds of a lantern lecture being added, a total of £4 2s 6d was remitted to China Inland Mission. The sum of £25 was raised for all purposes.The teaching staff consisted of Mr. Smith and Misses T. Sadler, D. Tarrant and G. E. Avery, Messrs F, L. Hartnell, H. Mullon and George Smith. The pianist was Thelma Goodacre. Thanks were extended to Messrs Frank Sykes and' D. Hardgreaves for helping With the anniversary arrangements and to Mr. L. M. Higginson ('Santa Claus). During the evening the scholars sang hymns, two of which had been arranged by the superintendent. Other items were given by Cyril Brooke, Ivy Sadler, Laurie Smith and Thelma Goodaere. Prizes were distributed by Messrs Boothroyd and Inglis as follow: Scripture, senior, Thelma Goodacre (94), Ivy Sadler (90), Mavis Sadler; junior, Laurie 'Smith (98), Ernest Smith (98); dux, special prize, Thelma Goodaere. Genera! prizes were awarded to all the scholars. On behalf of his colleagues, a member of the staff thanked the superintendent for his work. He mentioned that Mr. Smith travelled 60 miles each Sunday and collected scholars. His father, Mr.- G. Smith, also travelled about 20 miles each Sunday. Both their cars and that of Mr. Hartnell were used free of charge.
