MEETING OF THE BOARD. QUESTION OF SUBSIDIES. The Health Department nptifjed the Stratford Hospital Board ' yesterday that as contributions from the Tangarakau Medical Association . conferred benefits, in the form of. concessions in hospital fees, on members no further subsidy would be .paid on receipts from that source. That decision, it was stated, was apart from the previous' advice to the effect that ..subsidy was to be suspended on all voluntary ; contributions, The department,.: said the . chairman (Mr. W. L., Kennedy), was making a mistake in assuming. that the .contributions from the. medical association went into the board’s general fund.,, . , . The secretary, Mr. T. ,H. Penn, said subsidy was asked for 0n1y,.-on the amount received for . the doctor’s salary and not'.on.'the. amount, paid, for maintenance in the- hospital. . U ■ ? The department will, be ; on those lines. . ’ ' - ''7 ' The Ashburton Hospital Board .asked what. action the Stratford Board -was taking in respect of reduction of .wages as the question.. had be?n • discussed by the Ashburton Board, which desired to know what other boards were doing. “I don’t think - we should do anything at the present time as the question will be discussed at’ the. conference in March,” remarked the chairman. It was hot advisable .for one board to act without the' others. Any reduction should be general and jn . any- ease the department would probably have a say in the matter,; , I No action was taken. . ' / . Advice was received from the Strat-' ford Borough Council that the council was prepared to sell to the board a 33ft. strip on the eastern side of. Portia Street between Romeo Street- and Opunake Road, provided the board could make satisfactory arrangements with the owner of section -909. The chairman reported that, the owner of the section would be consulted,." The orthopaedic section of .the King George V; hospital, Rotorua, would be -closed as soon as circumstances permitted, advised the Health Department, No further orthopaedic cases would be received -for treatment and the, department 1 recommended that cases of ; the sort should ,in future be. sent to Auckland or Wellington, where treatment similar to that given at i the King George .V. Hospital was available. The medical superintendent, Dr. D. Steven, I reported that the number of patients admitted during the month, had been 53, discharged. 47, remaining 35, out-patients attended U, admissions to maternity ward 12, births. -12> /natal clinic 88, admission.to isolation ward 1, remaining 2. • There had-been ten operations. The matron, Mrs. -J, Hunt, reported that at the State midwifery examination in Wanganui .Nurses ' Clemo and Coombs had sat, in the State- 'general at New Plymouth Nurse O’Neill had sat, in anatomy and physiology Nurses oldridge, Wallace and Frame.had passed,'iu the half-yearly' hospital examination Nurses .
