The Ferry Company aiid the Union Company had decided that, while, not admitting liability, to facilitate ex gratia settlements of the claims lodged on behalf of the passengers, because it was felt that appeals to the Privy. Council; which-were other-■ wise unavoidable, might d?lay the final settlement for two or thrisq years.
