A HAWKE’S BAY PROPERTY

SUBDIVISION OF 18,000 ACHES.

BIG SCHEME OF DEVELOPMENT..

By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night.

The Minister of Lands to-day announced the purchase under the Lands for Settlement Act of Bee Bros.’ property known as “Kakariki,” near Kotemaori, 36 miles from Napier on the main route from Napier to WairOa. The area involved is 1315 acres of freehold, with buildings thereon. Bee Bros, hand over their interests in 16,630 acres of Crown land held at present under S.G.R. lease and pastoral run license, which is being resumed by the Crown. The property is carrying at present approximately 4000 ewes and 4500 dry sheep, besides 350 cattle and horses, it is proposed to subdivide portion of the block considered at preheat suitable for settlement and offer the same for selection as soon as possible. The balance of the block is not in a sufficiently developed state to plhce on the market yet, and prior to so doing it is the intention of the Government to carry out development works such as felling, ccrub-cutting and sowing down in grasses. The main highway, intersects the property, as also does the NapierGisborne railway (in course of construetion);' < With regard to the latter it will be an easy matter to provide access to railway sidings from any of the proposed subdivisions. The venodrs are to retain possession till March 31 next, and in the meantime the necessary preliminaries will >be undertaken by tiie Lands Department to offer for, selection the improved portion of the block and to develop the semiimproved areas. ■ > ■ The Minister further stated that it is anticipated that the subdivision of “Kakariki” will introduce a different class of fanning from that at present carried on.
