PRIZE-GIVING GATHERING. . The prize-giving of the Maryland, school was held in St. Mary’s Hall yes?-? terday afternoon. Mrs. Stafford first read the report-'4s follows: — . i At the beginning of 'the- year Our school opened with a roll nun;bet of 9 pupils. .On the second term this num? ;bcr increased to 16, enabling me to rip-, ply for registration, and on September 22 the inspector, Mr. McKenzie, paid a visit for this purpose. In his report Mr. McKenzie stated that suitable methods of teaching were bejng. usedand that the children were making gdod progress. The order, tone and discip’line of the. school were very, good, and also the attendance was very satisfactory. This was sent to the Director of Education in Wellington, w-itli the result .that the\school is now a registered private school and will receive an inspection and also an examining visit every year. , I v'ish to thank the parents for so kindly donating towards the cost of the prizes. The children have tried very .hard tpl do their work so I consider they are all. entitled.,to receive prizes. We feel very grateful to Canon Strong, who has conducted prayers «or us every Monday morning at;fhe church. The children have looked forward tp this little change. , A delightful programme was given by the children, who charmed the listeners with their lack of self-consciousness and thorough enjoyment of the proceedings. The programme was as follows:—Pianoforte solo, “Tarantelle,” Sylvia Whittington; carol, “I Saw Three Ships,” with actions, seven nursery rhymes, all; recitation, “The First Step,” Betty Duncan.; song, “Old Roger is Dead,” all; recitation, “Home Thoughts ‘ from Abroad,” Sylvia Whittington;- song, “The Mower,” all; recitation, “Little Bird,” Rae,Logan and Joyce Meyer; song,/‘The . Ball,” all; recitation, “Six-' pence,” David Roskruge; violin solo, “The Post Boy,” Betty. Duncan; recitation, “Wee Willie Winkle”; recitation, “My Brother,” Shirley Roy and Maurice 'Beresford; song, “The Rainbow,” all; marching song; action song, “The Sleeping Beauty,” - all. Mias Gwen Stafford was accompaniste.
Mrs. Stafford then called upon. Canon Strong'to present the prizes as follows: Standard 4:. Sylvia Whittington 1, Betty Duncan 2. Standard; 2: Joyce Meyer 1, Rae Logan ~:2. " Standard I (special prizsj):David Roskruge. Primer 3: Maurice Beresford, Erica Croker. Canon Strong congratluated Mrs. Stafford on the work of the children and the enjoyable afternoon, after which Mrs. Stafford was presented with :a leather attache case and a posy of pansy and maidenhair fern from her pupils. The parents and friends then ‘ viewed the splendid display of sewing, hand-work, raffia and school work.
