Cun-liffe-Lister’s amendment to continue the Dye-stuffs Act till 1936 was defeated by 255 votes to 225. Six Liberals, including Sir John Simon, voted against the Government. Several left wing Labourites did not vote. ' ,
The .president of, the Board of Trade, Mr. W. Graham, announced in the House of Commons on November 19 that the Government had decided that as the object of the Dye Stuffs Act had been attained it should lapse on January 15, This Act provided for the safeguarding of the dye-making industry by a system of prohibition subject to licensing, and it was expressly provided in the Act that it should continue in force for a period of ten years and no longer. Recently a committee showed that the industry had now reached a’ stage at which it was capable of meeting a very large proportion of the requirements of dye-stuff users in- the United Kingdom and of carrying on an increasing export trade.
The manufacturers had indicated their ability to meet normal foreign competition in respect of price. . \
