ALLEGED EVASION OF TAX

The Inland Revenue Commissioners charged Theophile Jean Baptiste Desnos, chemical manufacturer, Richmond, Surrey, with falsely understating by £lB,862 his supcr-ta.y returns for six years, from 1921 to 1927, also with submitting false returns claiming relief for the
three years 1914 to 1917. These included rendering alleged false accounts of the J.' smanian Eucalyptus Oil Company from 1910 to 1925. , The total omissions were £lOO,OOO, and defendant was liable to-£40,000 taxation, of which £35,200 had been paid._ Desnos said he had won £bo,ooo by gambling at Monte Carlo m 1914-la. The oil company had branches m London and Melbourne, and‘it is alleged that Des held a majority of the shares. It was disclosed that the profits of the London business were concealed in the Australian profits, namely £16.000, which therefore never paid British, income tax. Tlua ewe was adjourned.
