CONDITIONS IN CHINA

THE MUKDEN WAR LORD. REPORT FROM MISSIONARY. . In a letter from Tientsin, North China, dated September 10, the Rev. Samuel Glanville, of • Christchurch, writes: “I have just received a permanent appointment to Tientsin, and our China Inland Alission has rented a small flat for our residence. Since last writing our city and province have had a complete turn-over politically, for the Alukden war lord took it into his head tq send troops down to relieve the Shansi party of their responsibility in } ,protecting the province of Hopei. He sent down tens of thousands of troops,, and' his appointees will now occupy all important offices and take complete control. “The new Northern Government, which was in process of formation in Peking,” Air. Glanville states, “was soon dissolved before the incoming of the Alanchurian forces. Peace has been maintained, and we believe it will last, although there is still fighting in the province of Honan. The model Governor of Shansi seems to be a defeated man, but Afarshal Feng is apparently holding his own. for the time being. “On the whole, summer crop? this year have been good and famine conditions, which were so bad last year, are now a thing of the past. I am sorry to say there has been a serious recrudescence of poppy-growing lately, and more land is under its cultivation than is being used to produce corn. From the human standpoint the situation throughout the country seems to be well nigh hopeless, yet in spite of it all the common people are as willing as ever to listen to the gospel, and we are so glad that we have such a message of hope to proclaim to the people, who arS oppressed out of measure.”
