NEW PLYMOUTH PROGRAMME. EXCELLENT FINISHES PROVIDED.' The second series. of the New Plymouth Amateur Athletic Club’s evening sports meetings was begun at Pukekura Park last night. Increased entries for the various events added considerable interest,, and. the. close finishes in practically every race were a tribute to the handicapping of Mr. G. H. Weir. There was a large attendance and the weather conditions were ideal. The results are:—-

120 yards hurdles.—First heat: H. F. Fookes (2yds and I hurdle down) 1. Second heat: S. F. Fookes (7yds and 1 hurdle down) 1. Final: H. Eva was soon in front and at the end of the circuit was clear of Burr and Wallace,- with Gillies well back.'The field bunched a furlong from home but was carried out wide. 'by the pacemaker, allowing Gillies to get up on the inside and win by half a wheel from Florence, with Burr, Eya and Batten almost in line. Time, Imiii ilscc. 100 yards handicap.—First heat: S. Two miles handicap.—R. J. Stewart (220yds) 1, L. E. Fox (280yds) 2, R. J. Smith (220yds) 3. At the end of a mile Sadler and:Lander were clear of. Thomp-' son, A. Lander, Eaddy and Fox, while Hingston - and Hodgson were together about 50 yards behind the leaders. With half a mile to go Stewart had taken up the running from Smith, Fox and Lander, but the back men were very close. • Oh the last lap Hingston and- Hodgson had run up to fourth and fifth places respectively, while Fox and Smith threw out a strong challenge in the straight to Stewart. In a great .finish Stewart won b/ two feet from Fox, with Smith a yard away. Ten yards further back Hodgson just' beat Hingston. Time, 10 min 3 2-ssec. ,’. . Two ’mile cycle handicap.—Burr (380 yds) 1. <l. Gillies (230yds) 2, Lowe (400 yds)'- 3. At the conclusion of a mile . Lowe was leading Wallace; Burr, Gillies and Barlow. Gillies went to the front on the last lap from Burr and seemed to have the race in safe keeping, but Burr came again in .the straight and beat him -by half a length', /with Lowe a length further back.
