COURT WAIREKA SOCIAL

SUCCESSFUL ANNUAL REUNION. The- annual reunion social of Court Waireka A.O.F. was held at the Foresters’ Hall, New Plymouth, last Night. P.D.C.R. Bro. Frewin presided over a good attendance. “The A.0.F.” was proposed by Bro. Cameron, who emphasised the value of reunions. It was regrettable that- the brethren did not take more interest in the meetings of the society, he; said, but he felt sure the reunion would t< -u to foster the spirit of brotherhood. District Chief Ranger Bro. Were,- a visiting officer, replied. 'P.D.C.R. Bro. Tate (Waitara) proposed the toast of “Court Waireka,” a"d congratulated the court on its growing membership and sound financial position. District Secretary Bro. Tunbridge, replying, stated that Court Waireka had 761 members and was the second largest in New Zealand. This reflected great credit on the executive of the Court. Combining other Forester Lodges in New Plymouth, there were over 1000 members, and that was a great record. This year they had enrolled 40 new members in spite of the difficult times. Although not a great percentage of many members attended, the, regular meetings, those who came worked hard in the interests of the court.

The chairman expressed pleasure in welcoming Mr. R. C. Hughes and referred to his fine record as the solicitor of the court for about 50 years —since its inception. Mr. Hughes acknowledged the kindness extended to him and remarked that the times had passed so quickly that yesterday was bound up with to-day and all seemed just one happy episode. In appreciating the fact that he was connected with the lodge so many years, he was pleased to recall the only occasion he had had -to call upon the funds of the society—and that only ecently —the lodge doctor had attended him with expert knowledge rand the attention of a family doctor. Other toasts were spoked to by Bros. C. Steffensen (brother and sister lodges), Bro. Richards, Court Raleigh (reply), M. Clarke (auditors), C. T. Mills (reply), C. Frewin (our doctors), Dr. D. E. Brown (reply), M. Clow (oldest and youngest members), Mahutango (reply), M. Clarke (entertainers), V. Pellew and G. Mclsaacs (reply), C. T. Mills (the ladies). During the evening a delightful voeal and elocutionary programme added considerably to the success of the reunion and the contributing artists were Bros. A. Howlett, G. Mclsaac, ,C. T .Mills, L. Gainey, G. Hopkins, P. Tunbridge, A. A. Burgess, C. Anderson, I. Vickery, L. C. Frewin, 'Bros. F. Cornwall (who also gave a solo) mandolin, and V. Pellew, piano, were the accompanists.
