SHOT BY INSANE PREACHER
“INSTRUMENT OF PROVIDENCE.” REMARKABLE LETTERS WRITTEN By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. London, Nov. 17. The Rev. Peter Carmichael Marr, of the Church of Scotland, was arrested at Leith on Augu-t 30 on a charge of murdering James Dalgleish, whom he shot with a revolver. Dalgleish was walking alomr the strets and shots were heard; he fell to the ground and died before reaching hospital. Medical evidence at the trial disclosed that Marr believed himself chosen as an instrument of Providence. Several doctors gave evidence that Marr was suffering from delusional insanity, and believed the act was justifiable. Letters Marr wrote to the Lord Advocate contained remarkable passages. One declared: “I am entirely blameless and can resume, my duties with still greater devotion, deeper fervour and spiritual understanding.” The verdict was that Marr was insane and he was sentenced to be detained during the King’s pleasure.
