APPOINTMENTS ANNOUNCED MINISTER NAMES PERSONNEL MR. BURDHI\IN DBPUTY-CHAIRMAX FORMERLY RESIDENT OF HAWERA The personnel of the unemployment board constituted in the terms of the Unemployment Act, 1030, was Announced at New Plymouth last iff&ht by the Minister of Labour, the Hon. S. G. Smith, following the approval of the Governor-General. The function of the board will be to assist in the administration of the Act. Mr. H. B. Burdekin will be deputychairman of the board, said the Minister, and the first meeting will be held at Wellington on Tuesday. Mr. Burdekin was a prominent resident of Hawera until about four years ago. He was president of the Hawera branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association and was connected actively with public affairs. The appointments, which will date from to-morrow and are for a term of two years, are as follow:— Government Nominees.—Hugh Blake Burdekin, public accountant, Wellington; George Finn, merchant, Auckland. Primary Industries.—Patrick James Small, farmer, Kairanga. Secondary /Industries. —Francis Leigh Hutchinson,'company secretary, Christchurch. Workers’ Organisations—"Walter Bromley, president, Trades and Labour Council, Wellington; Oscar Mcßrine, waterside worker, Auckland. New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association.—Walter Edmund Leadley, secretary, Christchurch. UNION ASKS A QUESTION. Mfl. McBRINE’S NOMINATION. Auckland, Last Night. There was an attendance of between 200 and 300 at a special meeting of members of the Auckland Waterside Workers’ Union. The meeting was called for the purpose of requesting the president of the union, Mr. Oscar McBrine, to explain why he had allowed himself to be nominated .for a seat on the Unemployment Board. The union, which is affiliated to the Alliance of Labour, had, in common with other orga isations associated with the alliance, decided to take no part in the setting up of the board on the grounds that the workers were not to select their own representatives on that board. It was contended that Mr. Mcßrine had allowed his name to go forward for selection contrary to the wishes of his union.
