47 TH FIXTURE OPENS TO-DAY. EXCELLENT ENTRIES'RECEIVED. The Egmont A; arid. P. Associations 47,tE. annual show will > open to-day at the Hawera showgrounds and will conclude to-morrow- Entries this year havebeen most satisfactory, particularly in the cattle and Clydesdale classes. / A~ number of imported cattle of the Ayrshire and Jersey breeds will be exhibited. The female classes in the dairy .breeds are particularly well filled. The Clydesdale section is the strongest to be shown on.the west coast this seasen. Competent judges consider it better than the section at the recent Manawatu and West Coast show. The hack classes/are also good, competition being especially keen among maiden and light hacks.-' ■ ■ ,< t The 'sheep section is larger than usual and.very satisfactory-for a dairying district ' A new event, the fat lamb championship, has drawn 22 . entries. The lambs will be judged alive and the careases later re-judged in London . ; There has been a decline in entries in the pig,section but the quality has been maintained , The Berkshire class is a strong “one, including most of the best of the breed in New Zealand. Home industries,are a feature of tne show. The entries total well over 1000, a, record for the show. ■ 1 A new feature of the fixture will be tiie opening of the show on both nights. The innovation has proved popplar in other centres. An '.extra event added to the programme ’ for. the first day is trotting classes for. registered trotting horses which' will give an exhibition in the ring. The ring classes for the first day are well filled and keen competition is assured in all sections. -r-1 • To-day’s programme is: 9 a.m., exhibition of machinery, -implements, motorcars, permanent stalls, vehicles, etc.; .9 a.m., judging cattle, sheep and pigs; 9.30 a.m., judging hacks and harness horses; 10 a.m., judging Clydesdale horses .(other than entires), brood mares and home industries; 1 p.m., maiden hunters’ competition, wire jumping aimpetition, hunting competition, ’ ladies” hunting competition; 1 p.m., spring carters; 2 p.m., trotting classes; 6 p.m., i showgrounds closed to the public; 7 p.m., night show opens; 8.15 p.m., lecture by Mr. A. L. Thompson, M.R.C.V.S., of the Department of Agriculture, in the A. and P. buildings, Nelson Street, on the management and feeding of farm animals. SOUTH TARANAKI TENNIS. 14 INTER-CLUB COMPETITIONS. Wet weather prevented the commencement of the South Taranaki intc -cluo * lawn tennis competition last Saturday, . but it, is hoped to launch the series at the end of this week.
