ASSAULT BY STOWAWAY
STEWARD FINED AT AUCKLAND. DISTURBANCE ON NIAGARA. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. A ship’s steward Frederick Brodwick, aged 27, appeared before Air. F. K. Hunt, S.M., at the Police Court to-day charged with assaulting George Saunders, patrolofficer of the Niagara, on the high seas. Brodwick was charged also with stowing away on the ‘Niagara at Sydney last Thursday. He pleaded guilty to both charges. Patrol-Officer Saunders said he was called to the purser’s office on the ship at 7.15 on Thursday night after the ship had cleared Sydney. Brodwick was given him to be locked up. Brodwick refused to go with witness and made use of abusive and obscene language. He made a swing and rushed at witness who had then to use forcible methods to make accused secure in a cabin. “I went to the bridge to report the matter to the master and on returning to the cabin I found Brodwick had kicked 1 a panel out of the door,” added the patrol officer. Brodwick told the magistrate he did not remember anything of the assault because he was under the influence of liquor. On the stowing-away charge he was fined £7 or 14 days’ imprisonment and on the other £2 or seven days, the sentences to be cumulative.
