Auckland Al agistrate’s Court, John Johnson, aged 60, on pleading guilty to keeping a common gaming house at his home, was fined £lOO. or three months’ imprisonment. Detective Snedden said that when he called on Johnson on Saturday Johnson offered him £lOO “to square it.” Counsel submitted that the detective misunderstood the statement, as Johnson meant he would pay that amount into court rather than be convicted. The magistrate, Mr. Hunt: “Well, if he was offering £lOO on Saturday he can pay it now.”
