INTERESTS OF BUSINESS MEN
CHAMBER OR .COMMERCE MEETING. ROAD WORK DELATED IN OHURA. The council of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce Jiiet in New-Plymouth last night. Present were Messrs. L. M. Moss (chairman), J. A. R. McGregor, P. E. Stainton, J. McNpill.-W. J. Pehn,'F. E. Beamish and H. J. Larkin. -It had come to his knowledge that it was a^pi-aefice'.of -certain banks not to allow the grouping of cheques for the payment of-exchange when two cheques were drawn on separate branches in the cities, wroth a New Plymouth business man. Thevincident to which he referred was that of two-cheques, one drawn on the. head in ..-Wellington, and the other drawn on the ..bank’s north-end branch. That did not seem, consistent, fie asked the chamber to take the mat* ■ ter with the" Associated Banks so that businessmen would know the position.. ,/y '... . : ■■■ '. The question is to be referred to the secretary /of the Associated Chambers. of Commerce. ? ■. The secretary, of. the Associated Chambers of Commerce, Mr. G. W. Massinghanr, that; he would be very pleased’^to'attend the quarterly meeting of the chamber in November. • Local bodies in the Ohura wrote that work had been stopped on the Topgapor util-Man gar oil' Road in -.the Ohura county and asked the Taranaki chamber to assist in having the work completed a’sl. the Minister of Public Works had premised. Mr. Penn explained that the road! went off just thb other side of Mt. Messenger. .This end was in the Stratfold public, works district and the other end in the Taumarunui district. The rodd was open, this end but uncompletcdSat the Taumarunui .end.. The importance of the road was that it gave access to the Ohura end of the railway.
- The chairman said the Taranaki chamber had written to the Taumarunui public, works district office regarding the matter but had so far received no reply. The public works committee and Mr. Pqnn were delegated to deal with the matter.'
hThe Minister of Railways wrote acknowledging" receipt "of the resolutions of the Taranaki chamber with regard to railway freights. The chamber’s representations would be given full consideration. The Minister would communicate With 'the chamber at a later date. j.Tho chamber decided to write regret(ing the action of the Associated .Cham--I£ys of Commerce in supporting the Wb.eat tariffs 'and' asking that-the whole ibatter be re-opened before the .Government made arrangements for next season. - ,
: The chamber decided to ask the Hon. S. G. Smith* to address- the quarterly meeting on the principles of the Unemployment Act.
