KAWAROA PARK SOCIETY

ACTIVITIES OF THE YEAR.

HEALTHY FINANCIAL POSITION.

The annual meeting of the Kawaroa Park Beautifying Society was' held in the Bungalow last evening, Mr. V. H. Beal presiding over a large .attendance. The chairman read a number of apologies and expressed pleasure at the number present which, though smaller than in previous years through inclement weather and the prevalence of sickness, was very gratifying. The report of the year’s activities stated: A review of the society’s year again shows that its existence has been well justified. The principal aim of the committee, the proper maintenance and improvement of the reserve under its control, had been well achieved. During the period the committee again relied for revenue on the proceeds of the society’s afternoon tea rooms, amusement evenings, tennis courts, shop and the annual Easter picnic and all these branches have, as in past years, been managed with industry and unselfishness by members of the society with resulting financial benefit to the organisation. At the commencement of the present year the committee was much boiicerned with the damage occasioned/., to the frontage of the reserve by extremely heavy seas, but fortunately through the timely assistance rendered by the New Plymouth Borough Council this concern no longer existed. A substantial protection wall had been erected along’practically the whole of the sen frontage of the park at comparatively minute expense to- the society. In addition to, this improvement a /new pavilion had been erected at the ladies’ croquet courts, new storage sheds had been built and substantial and permanent stalls purchased for Easter picnic purposes. The children’s playground apparatus had been thoroughly overhauled and painted, all lawns heavily top-dressed and slagged and generally the condition of the. grounds has never been better. The committee also let a.contract for the enlargement of the existing shop premises in the Bungalow, at a cost of approximately £l5O. A perusal of the. financial statements over the last few years reveals that the shop has been a factor in producing revenue, sufficient to enable the committee to carry out necess-.' sary work and the committee feels that, expenditure in enlarging the, shop premises will be justified in the future. | . The annual picnic entirely fulfilled most sanguine expectations and in spite of a solid counter-attraction, the function ■ proved‘’a. success « from alls .view-, points. A crowd of approximately 5000 people attended the picnic and ally contributed to an excellent result. 1 The report made reference to_the continuing and untiring manner in. which! the members of the general committee ( of the society had worked during the past year in the interests of the. so-j ciety. . • ■' ■ The chairman said ' the balance-sheet' must be pleasing to members. . There was a credit balance of. ‘£.603 13s 3d a? compared with £429 3s 5d for last year, which was very pleasing. There had been more -opposition in both euchreparties and afternoon teas than previ-' ously but the people were being kept interested in the welfare of the park by the society’s other activities. The shop and the tennis courts were important factors in the success of the park, a large part of revenue coming from those Sources. Although the shop was about £3B behind on last year’s revenue the profits were’ £l4 greater, which spoke volumes for the efficiency ef the shopkeeper. ’ In- spite of the varying weather 1 tho revenue from the tennis courts had remained practically the Same. Counterattractions on picnic day caused a fall in returns but this had been counterbalanced by a smaller expenditure. jThe balance-sheet revealed the position of the society as a very healthy one, and it must cause members a certain amount

of pride. x - i The I’eport and balance-sheet werq adopted. 1 A vote of thanks was passed to Mr; R. B.
