TRADE WITH EAST INDIES

DOMINION EXPORTS

POSSIBILITIES STRESSED GOVERNMENT URGED TO ASSIST. CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE MOVE. By T«l«gr*ph.—Press Association. The Hermitage, Last Night. Speaking of the possibility of trade •between New Zealand and the' Dutch East Indies, the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. P. A. de la Perrelle, said at the conference of the Associated Chambers of Commerce yesterday that he had had a conversation with Mr. Ed-, win Salmond, Wellington, a member of the executive of the Associated Chambers, regarding such trade and had been so impressed with Hie suggestions made that ho had brought the matter before Cabinet, which had given the Minister authority to investigate and, if thought fit, send a man to the Indies to develop trade.

At the conference to-day Mr. Salmond said undoubtedly it was desirable that an earnest effort should be made to develop New Zealand’s trade with the Indies. There was a potential market which might be worth millions to New Zealand in years to come. The conference passed a remit that it was of opinion definite steps should be taken to increase New Zealand’s export trade with tho Dutch East Indies and urged the Government to send a missionary, preferably a commercial man, to that territory immediately to gather necessary information and report fully on the prospects. Pending the establishment of a direct service between New Zealand and the Dutch East Indies and the consequent necessity of shipping New Zealand products through Australia, the Government was urged to pay the extra freight and transhipping charges thereby incurred.
