CANADA’S DUTY ON BUTTER
CURTAILMENT OF SHIPMENTS. PROBABLE EFFECT ON MARKET., (By Wire—Special to News.) Auckland, October 21. • The increased Canadian duty on New Zealand butter, which came into opeiation on October 12 has caused an immediate and severe curtailment of exports from New Zealand to Canada, The Aorangi, which sailed for Vancouver to-day, bad only 6800 boxes of butter, compared with 37,500 boxes carried by the Niagara, which arrived at Vancouver on October 10, two days before the increased duty came into force. Last year the Niagara sailed from Auckland on October 23 with 17,533 boxes of butter for Canada. Whether future shipments will show any improvement is a matter for conjecture. A Vancouver retailer recently pointed out in a Canadian newspaper that this year’s quantity of Alberta and Saskatchewan butter was already made, and that butter was not manufactured in the prairie provinces during the winter.
A note of optimism for New Zealand producers is struck by his statement that the Canadian manufacturers could not materially increase their. supply. Last year the supply of Canadian butter ran out around Christmas and most people lived on the New Zealand brand until May. “This year,” he said, “with the New Zealand brand considerably dearer, the consumer will as usual buy .from New Zealand because there is nothing else to buy.”
