CHAMBER OF COMMERCE WORK. ANNUAL MEETING OF MEMBERS. The annual meeting of the-Waitara Chamber of Commerce was held on Monday, Mr. H. J. “The .chamber extended its support to the Taranaki.body in the establishment of a night express service between New Plymouth and Wellington. The service ran for a short period, but after what may be considered an insufficient trial was terminated on the grounds of the necessity for economy in railway administration.

“The-unsatisfactory condition of the Main North Road between Mahoenui and I Te Kuiti was causing some concern at this time last year, but the road has since been materially improved. At the request of the yyajtara Retailers’ Association, the chamber expressed opposition to the proposal to make Saturday afternoon the universal half-holi-day in the Dominion. This project, for the time being at any rate has been dropped. In conjunction with the borough council the chamber inquired into the likelihood, u of a curtailment of the service on thd Waitara-Leppert'on line, but at presefit there is. no indication that the service will be reduced.

“The chamber took up the matter of the ,increase in the premiums for certain' classes of risks affecting retailers in the town, with the result that the chairman and; secretary of the Underwriters’ Association waited on the president, setting out the reasons which had compelled them to make jthe increase.’ A request for a re-classifica-tion, was also declined.’* . The Palmerston North Chamber was supported in its advocacy qf a board for the- management of railways. ‘ It was decided, to inquire from the Post and Telegraph Department whether provision was being made for one or two telephone exchange operators at the new’'■p'bSt office.'
