WEATHER UNFAVOURABLE OLD BOYS 209 RUNS FOR FOUR. DRAWN MATCH AGAINST PATEA. Weather conditions were not in favour of brilliant cricket in South Taranaki on Saturday, but nevertheless, playing against Patea in the first championship match of the season, Old Boys B knocked up the formidable total of 209 runs for four wickets and declared. Despite this the match was drawn, Patea having 98 runs for seven wickets when stumps were drawn. Old Boys batted first and was in fine form, the opening pair, the Barker brothers, scoring well until W. Barker at 40 was bowled by Peterson. This first wicket partnership collected 98 runs. H. Barker was bowled shortly afterwards for 63 runs. Cheevers, with 68 not out, scored the highest tally of the match, hitting forcefully for his runs. Of five bowlers tried Peterson proved the best, taking two wickets for 58 runs. Paten opened disastrously, one wicket being down for no runs. Then two partnerships by Palmer and Gibbs and Palmer and Peterson brought the score to--70. Peterson contributed 24 and Gibbs 10. The other four wickets could do •little, and Palmer carried his bat for 42, the score at the drawing of stumps being 98 for seven wickets. Pacey secured five wickets for 32 runs. Playing at Hawera, Okaiawa secured an easy three-point win over Hawera High School,, winning by an innings and 12 runs? High School opened and one wicket soon fell for one' run. Thrush and Surgenor then gave a bright exhibition, . putting on 38 runs before the next wicket fell. The rest, however, could do little against Okaiawa’s effective bowling, and the hist wicket fell for 61. Crawford and Linn wore in fine bowling form, Crawford taking four wickets for 7 and Linn four for 10.

Okaiawa’s total was only mediocre, 105, Penny contributing 29 from bright cricket and Betts 17. Okaiawa put High School in again and dismissed it for for 32, thus winning the match by an innings and 12 runs. Sagar (13) was the only one to reach double figures. 'The first competition matches of the season at Strutford were both marred by bad weather and had to be abandoned before they were completed. In the senior game little progress was made, only three of the visiting batsmen making the journey from bank to wicket, The juniors were able to reach a more advanced stage and had so far progressed when rain brought about the conclusion of the game that Stratford Technical High School secured a two-point win over the Stratford junior team.The Hawera team visited Stratford to play the Senior home eleven, and two batsmen had compiled 86 when the game was’ abandoned, to be finalised later in the season if necessary. Nielson and Crombie opened for Hawera.
