OLD BOYS’ BIG LEAD COLLAPSE OF WESTERN PARK. EARLY SEASON NERVOUSNESS. Batting first, Western Park collapsed against the bowling o£ Old Boys at Pukekura Park and then through weakness in its attack let Old Boys gain a solid lead on the first innings. All out for a total of 33, Western Park watched the Old Boys’ score mount to 211 before the day’s play was over, giving Old Boys a lead of 178 runs. Suffering from the early season feeling and a touch of nervousness, Western Park saw ito first two batsmen. Budd and Turvey, go out without scoring. Purvey, a Wellington player of whom a good deal was expected, was beaten by a smart ball in Eggleton’s first over. Herbert, who went in first wicket down, made a momentary stand and topped the individual scores with a meagre eight runs. Then the rot set in and sound batsmen like Jones, Bums and Haughton were going out for ones and fours and sixes to the good length bowling of Eggleton and Potty, who both came out with excellent averages. Old Boys batted surprisingly well for the first match of the season. Lash, who opened, struck excellent form and ran through the whole range of strokes for his 62. L. Petty joined him and with a mixture of good play and good luck added 34 to the score. Weakened by the absence of Quickfall the Western Park bowling was not very deadly. Short length ball/s were fairly frequent and Lash pulled them hard to the boundary. Later in the day the rain came, the matting sagged and the ball was slippery for the bowlers. ’ Kirwin and Papps hit out freely and between them added 57 runs. DBudd took two wickets for 8 runs and Turvey three for 34. Details are:—- ( WESTERN PARK. First Innings. / D. Budd, b Petty •; 0 Turvey, b Eggleton' 0 Herbert, eA. Petty, b Eggleton ... 8 B.
