K.- Hunt, hearing charges against brothers, George Cooper Jackson and .Thomas Jabkson, of betting at Carlaw Park League football ground. Detectives said that they had seen the brothers at the park several Saturdays. They mingled with the crowd, groups gathered around them, and they often saw. numbers of men hand them something. . . • Counsel expressed the opinion that 25 per cent, of the people attending League football games at the park made bets. His client,' George Jackson, entered the box and swore that the only bet he made was one with a plain-clothes constable, who had asked Tiihi to lay it. The magistrate, after hearing more, said that if George Jackson had not gone into the box and committed perjury he would have fined him only £2. "Now he is fined £4.” Thomas Jackson whs then charged. • He pleads’ guilty and I shall not put him in the e box,” said counsel/ “All right,” replietl Mr. Hunt “He’is fined £2.”
