BETTER SYSTEM WANTED

DOMINION SALESMANSHIP

MR. G. FORBES’ OBSERVATIONS.

ADVANCE IN HONEY WELCOMED.

By Telegraph—Press Assh. —Copyright.. London, October 15.

The New Zealand Prime Minister, Mr. G. W. Forbes, devoted an off day at the Imperial Conference to- commercial inquiries. In the morning he inspected the Smithfield market and had talks with authorities dealing with N<w Zealand lamb. Then he saw the New Zealand Butter Board and discussed the present difficulties.

Speaking of the abnormal disparity in prices between New Zealand and Danish butter, Mr. Forbes expressed the opinion that the high price of Danish was largely due to excellent salesmanship and organisation. He thought New Zealand should have a far more thorough system of salesmanship in London.

Mr. Forbes in the afternoon was taken round the factory from which Imperial bee honey is distributed. He was glad to note that, in contrast to all other produets, honey was advancing in price. He was delighted with the honey distributors’ efficiency in advertising and propaganda. Mr. Forbes in a speech at the motor manufacturers’ dinner emphasised the Empire’s marketing opportunities, adding that the United States in 1928 supplied 117,698 cars of a total of £278,742 sold in the Empire, and this despite heavy preferential tariffs. He. was glad British makers were gradually making up the lost ground in New Zealand, where they had the advantage of a recently increased preference duty. A £4OO British car entered New Zealand for £99 165., compared with £2Bl on a foreign car. Mr. Forbes welcomed Sir Archibald Boyd Carpenter’s recent visit to investigate trade conditions, a move which he said other industries might advantageously follow.
