CORRUPTION IN CHICAGO
“CAUSE OF, CITY’S SHAME”
CHURCH FEDERATION REPORT “DOMINATION BY CROOKS” GRAFT IN PUBLIC SERVICE By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. Rec. 8.30 p.m. New York, Oct. 14. The Chicago Federation of Churches, which has conducted an extensive inquiry into the killing of Lingle, a newspaper reporter, to-day issued a report denouncing the inter-fraternity of gangdom, politics and the law-enforcing agencies of Chicago. The federation alleges that the police and public officials are dominated by politicians, gangsters and “racketeers,” that at times grafting on public funds and an orgy of crime result in an approach to the breakdown of civil authority and that greed for easy money has developed an interlocking system of control which threatens to throttle Chicago’s civil business and social life. Under various headings the federation lists “political crooks, dishonest business men, racketeers, gambling, prostitution and boot-legging as responsible for Chicago’s shame.”
