LIPSTICK AND DAGGER.
One of most cheerful signs of the post-war; times -is the girl hiker. Rucksack on back,, rough stockings rolled below >the-knee, and stick in hand, she may be met everywhere on the byways and footpaths round London, and especially on the Surrey uplands. Nor i& she daunted even on lonely trolls by the frequency of the assaults on women by the miscreants or. lunatics who haunt some of our more deserted commons. It you strike up a comradely acquaintance' of the open road you will almost invariably l discover that the post-war flapper, when she dons her rucksack, includes in her. hiking equipment a pocket pistol dr a ‘small bowie knife, as well as a darning needle and a lipstick. A good, many have a toy pistol with the'choked muzzle filed down, and thereby converted into quite an effective weapon. It all adds in the mind of Miss;l9So to the spice of adventure.
