ARMED BANDITS

GARAGE-KEEPER ATTACKEP. WOUNDED MAN’S PI/UGK. Two armed bandits attempted to rob the attendant at a petrol service station in Sydney at revolver point late one night recently, and deliberately shot: him when he offered resistance. The ate tendant, George Lane,aged 20, . was wounded in the thigh.' His ass4jla’Uts fled, and escaped ip the darkness. ... Mr. Lane was working on the, sales accounts in the office of tfie petrol station at about -10.45 p.m., whew : two. young men entered the office. The sec--ond attendant was at the back ,of the building at the time, and Mr. Lane thought; that the.men were in search’of petrol. <-/ " ... ” “What can I do for you 2” he asked. One of the men drew a revolver frqm his pocket and presented it at the head of' the astonished attendant. . - -

“Put up;.your hands,” he ordered,, “and hand over'your cash.” ■ /-.,/.. For an instant Mr. Lane was dumbfounded. . ■ ;. . '

“I’ll give you a go for. it,” he shouted, and, leaping over the counter, struck out at the bandit. A brief scuffle ,eqsued. Air. Lane struck the revolver down, and.’at the same time the map fired. The bullet entered Mr. Lane’s left thigh. Turning round, the-men rap out of the office, down the street, and then turned into Surry Hills/ Despite the pain of-his wound, aqd the fact that he was,losing blood rapidly, '.Mr, Lane pluckjjy chafed the ’ rpeh for over 100 yard;;, and- then staggered back to the service station on -the verge of collapse. He was later taken to Sydney hospital. More than £6O was in the office at the time. Three weeks ago tfie same station was entered by thieves, and £3O was stolen.
