TELEPHONE SPANS WORLD
DEVELOPMENTS IN WIRELESS.
BRITAIN’S CENTRAL POSITION. British Official Wireless. Rec. 5.5 p.m. Rugby, Oct. 12. The Postmaster-General, Professor Lees Smith, at Birmingham last night said the post office had a large part to play in future in Imperial questions. The latest work of the post office in the Imperial sphere consisted in the development of a series'of wireless telephone services whereby conversations in the human voice would be conducted with the Dominions through the station at Rugby,/the largest and most powerful in the world.
The wireless telephone service between London and New York carried far more messages than any other commercial telephone service in the world. The longest telephone link, to Australia, was opened in May and arrangements were proceeding to extend the service to New Zealand at an early date. A direct service to Canada would be opened within a few months. There had been secured for Britain a central position in the world’s system of long-distance telephone services, enabling British subscribers to communicate by conversation with 90 per cent, of all telephone subscribers anywhere on the earth. • ■
