SOLO CLIMBING ON MT. EGMONT.
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —My remarks re the policy of the Mt. Egmont Alpine Club concerning solo climbing on the mountain in winter time do not apparently meet with the approval of a “Solo Climber in Stratford,” according to the interview published in your paper to-day. Personaljly, I am not concerned with him, and it is’ rather a pity he does not give his name so" that we can know who this authority on the question is. I suppose he is quite prepared to pit his knowledge and judgment against such men as Peter Graham and J. P. Murphy. Only on Monday last Mr. Murphy, of Dawson Falls, who is chief guide of the Mt. Egmont Alpine Club, remarked Io me that he was pleased to see 1 had put our club on-side regarding solo climbing, and on speaking on the subject we refer to snow and ice conditions. Personally, I prefer a policy of safety first, and trust tlyit our club at least will not depart from it. In referring to policy, I refer Io the club, and not to individuals. Is it not, after all, the duty of members, and particularly club officers, to accept the policy approved for the club as a. whole, even though it may mean a little selfsacrifice, and thus set the example of what is essential in a good leader, discipline.—l am, etc., L. O. HOOKER, President, Mt. Egmont Alpine Club, Hawera, October 2, 1930.
