NEW PLYMOUTH Y.W.C.A.

SUCCESS OF THE YEAR’S WORK ANNUAL a/eETING HELD. The ninth annual meeting of the New Plymouth branch of the Young Women’s Christian Association, held at the Y.W.C.A. hall last nighty was attended by about 100 members and supporters, mostly ladies. The Mayor (Mr. H; V, S. Griffiths) presided. The president, . Mrs. A. Alexander, was unable to be present. After the singing of the National Anthem and a hymn, the Rev. J. D. McL. Wilson led the meeting in prayer. ■ The general report, as already published, was adopted. The very satisfactory financial-results of the year’s operation of the' hostel' were commented upon by the treasurer (Mrs. A. G. Johnson) ,in presenting the balance-sheet. A great deal ,of this success was due to the efficient management of the late matron, she .said. The principal liabilities .were .mortgages on the hostelry totalling'-£4700 and a mortgage. ..of £3OO on the clubroom property. Accumulated ’ funds amounted to £3820. The assets totalled £9OlO 13s Id, including freehold property valued at £5485 12s 9d. club room property £2707 Ils'ld,..and'filia l niture £1316 12s 6d. Bank credits were, respectively,. £249. 12s lid and £J.44 3s lOd. The fees received at [the '-hostel totalled £1744 9s lOd and on the year’k working there was a credit-of £5O 16s 7d. . . ; The chairman remarked upon’ the'-ex-cellent credit balance following a'strenuous period during which the erection of the new hall had been undertaken; When the liabilities already incurred had been wiped off -- the association would be able to extend further, i.fs range of activity. It was very .pleasant to note the progress made. The association possessed a very fine property,, admirably suited to its purpose. - He. was:sure the prediction made at their gathering last year that they would' all enter into the real spirit of the movement, with it? genuine Christian' principles had been'fulfilled. Following- upon the presentation of a report of the club girls’ activities during the year the chief citizen, Miss Nancy Gardner, presented, Miss Law, the national general secretary of the Y.W.C.A., with the badge of* the Girl Citizen movement. .: t- '■ ■■ , • /<' /;{• z VALUE OF THE MOVEMENT. • Mr. P. J. H. White, a member of . ths advisory board, 'complimented the association upon the, satisfactory results of the past year. Credit was. due to the association for the balance of £4783 of assets over liabilities, a fine record for nine, years’ working. The Girl Citizen movement had grown steadily and was proving of great value. The hostel’s work was, possibly, better , known' to parents outside New Plymouth as a home for boarders, but'-it deserved the support of women within the borough as a valuable social institution. An appeal for more adult members and more members 'of the board, was made by Mrs. Blundell, who deputised for Mrs. Alexander. She assured the meeting that the work among the young people was well worth while. ■ ■ Mrs. Blundell remarked that this would probably bo one of Miss Law’s last official visits to New Plymouth before being transferred to Y.W.C.A. work, in Canada,, They,, regretted very much the impending loss of : Mis;S'LaWV' services, but wished her success in Canada. .7'.'. 7" 7 1
