RETURN TO FULL CREAM

DEFINITE TARANAKI SWING SOUTHERN COMPANIES’ DECISION RESULT OF MR. lORNS’ REMARKS. Mr. W. A. lorns’ opposition to standardisation of cheese, expressed at a m/eting of the Dairy Board last week, has already born* fruit, and there' is a strong probability that a number of South Taranaki dairy factories will make full cream cheese for the remainder of the season. There has been for some time a section of the Mangatoki Company’s directorate that has looked upon standardisation with disfavour. Though , not strong enough numerically to sway their fellow directors to a decision to revert to full cream, their influence was sufficient to ensure that a meeting of shareholders would be. held to consider the position. This meeting was to have been held in J the near future, but Mr. lorns’ denunciation of standardisation put a different complexion on the matter. A meeting of directors decided to make full cream for the remainder of the season, with the result that the shareholders’ meeting was cancelled. The various factories commenced making the full cream article oyer the week-end. • The Mercmere and Mells companies decided at .the annual meetings to diseonti.aie the standardised make in view of alarming reports from the English markets. Ararata, Whajkamara and Melrose followed suit within a few weeks. It. is understood that the Lowgarth. directors have 'also decided to return to full cream. Mr. 0. B. Murdoch,- chairman of directors of the joll Company, was disinclined to comment on the position, but indicated that the directors were giving the question careful consideration. The question was considered at the annual meeting of D le Hawera. Company and the directorsthen stated that full cream would be made for the early months of the season. Up till the present standardised cheese has not been made at. any of the company’s factories, and so far as can fie ascertained no change is contemplated. Other factories, it lias been definite--ly ascertained, will continue to make standardised cheese unless the Dairy Board succeeds in having gazetted a rcgulation ■ forbidding it. . In many quarters the alarming reports were received with some suspicion. Though confirmation of the rumours has been given by the reports of Messrs, lorns and° Ross, the. latter .the Govern--’?nt grader, who has also just returned from "England, doubt still lingers in some quarters. A point that somewhat confuses the position is that of a possible premium for full cream cheese. Some, interests aver that this will be forthcoming. On the other hand numbers of directors believe that to retain their connections- importers will endeavour to keep the prices more or less on a par. If this is so they claim that they may as well standardise. A Daily News reporter was informed that the Tooley Street interests were themselves strongly in favour of a return to full cream. To give, encouragement to this end they would probably be able to secure a premium for the non-standardising factories. Though numbers of companies, have not yet decided their course of action, a definite swing back ,to full cream in South Taranaki. seems indicated. ■ • This will again raise the question of high testing milk. Standardisation was brought in as a solution of this problem,' but the consensus, of opinion amono- South Taranaki dairymen is that Yt has failed. \./ . . It is contended by some that,,a#'in England high testing milk is satisfactorily dealt with,, it could be similarly treated in New Zealand. In their opinion, instead of part skimming, a different method of manufacture is required, and it is understood that farreaching experiments are being conducted ■ ' ■ ■

G’i Tonks presided.arid .there were present representatives of, th e Hawera, Stratford and Patea'branches. The Aria Settlers’ Association wrote asking* for support in its eiideivonr to have a section of the Pa.ro Road jnetailed. The service, officer, Mr... J.
