HAWERA MAIN SCHOOL

COMMITTEE MEETING LAPSES. REPORT OF THE HEADMASTER. A meeting of the Hawera main school committee, which was to have been held on Thursday night, lapsed for want of a quorum. The report of the headmaster, Mr. J. W. Thomas, which was to have been presented to the committee, stated that the school had closed for the term holidays on August 22 and re-opened on September 9. The average attendance for last teun had been 557 with an average roll of 624. Owing to an epidemic of chick-en-pox more than 10 per cent, of the children had been absent daily and he had l applied to have the term’s attendance excluded ’ill computing the average yearly .attendance. Over the last two weeks this had been 585 and the present roll number was 631. Fourteen children had been admitted and eight withdrawn. Miss Burgess had been absent from September 11 to September 22 through illness and Miss J. Leach had acted as relieving teacher. Miss Peterson, who Lad been associated with the school for many years as pupil and teacher, had accepted an appointment at the Okato school and would leave Hawera on Monday. She had proved herself an efficient teacher and had taken a keen interest in all matters pertaining to the welfare of the school. Her departure would be a great loss. The inspectors had visited the school on September 15 and 16, and their report had been a favourable one. The new dental clinic A type building had been commenced and would be completed and ready for service early in the new year. Instruments for the boys’ military bra st band had been distributed and the boys, under the tuition of Mr. H. C. A. Fox, had been practising assiduously- . • MUSIC PUPILS’ RECITAL. MR. AND MRS. BONETTI’S PUPILS. The annual vocal and instrumental recital , by the pupils of Mr. and Mrs. Antoni Bonetti, Hawera, will be held on October 3 in the Grand Theatre, Hawera. The first half of the programme will be contributed solely by children between the ages of seven and twelve years. There are fourteen of children,' and they will give their numbers in a .prettily, devised “Fairy Scene.” Their items include piano solos and duets, violin solos and vocal splos. The curtain on the first hair will be rung down with a costume duet, “Bee and Butterfly.” After the interval older pupils will hold the stage. The popular Hawaiian orchestra will open this portion of the programme and will be followed by piano solos, duets and trios, the “Umbrella Song,” sung by six little girls, steel guitar duets, elocutionary items and;- songs in costume. PERSONAL AND GENERAL. Messrs; W. A. Spragg and V. Spragg leave -Hawera for Auckland to-day on a business trip. A re-arrangement of rooms at the hangar of the Hawera Aero Club at Durham I'eld was carried out on Thursday night by. two club members. The pilot-instruc-tor’s office, which was ; previously at the road end of the building, is- now at the other end, facing the lauding ground. A portion was partitioned oil and the change effected. Under this arrangement the instructor has a clear view of the field. The old instructor’s room will now be used by pilots and club members. It is hoped to furnish this room comfortably. . Thomas), which was to have been presented to the. committee of the Hawera main School.on Thursday night, is that over 309 of the children will take part in an operetta to be staged at the end of the tmm.. Mr.' Thomas stated- that practices were progressing and no effort was being spared to ensure a? creditable production. The question of obtaining a supply of electricity in the outer area will be discussed at a meeting of ratepayers and others interested to be held in the sup-per-room of the Patea town hall on Friday, Representatives of the South Taranaki Electric Power Board will address the meeting. The good work (hat the Methodist Home' Mission Department is doing among the Maoris is illustrated by the parties with whom the Rev. A. J. Seamer tours the country. Fine specimens of the native race, they are also talented entertainers, and the concerts they give are of high merit. The party which visited Norm an by on Thursday will be at the Grand Theatre, Hawera, on Monday. The programme includes karanga, poi dances, hakas and instrumental music.
